The community, which immediately fronts Port Phillip Bay, is located some 17 kilometres west-south-west of Melbourne, the state capital. Its estimated population of 18,843 residents over a land area of 10.4 square kilometres accounts for its density.
Formerly governed by the City of Altona, the community of Altona Meadows is now part of the Local Government Area of the City of Hobsons Bay. The suburb is within the State District of Altona (in the Victorian Legislative Assembly) and the Federal Division of Gellibrand (in the Australian House of Representatives). Cheetham Wetlands, a large park partly situated within Altona Meadows, is the suburb's primary local attraction.
